How Do You Find the Original Price from a Sale Price?
To reverse a discount, divide the sale price by (1 minus the percent off as a decimal): original = sale ÷ (1 − p/100). For example, if an item is $60 at 25% off, the original price is 60 ÷ 0.75 = $80. Use this to verify whether an advertised original price is genuine.

For a $60 item marked 25% off: original = 60 ÷ (1 − 0.25) = 60 ÷ 0.75 = $80. That means the retailer should have been selling it at $80 before the sale. If the tag or website claims the original was $120, that's a red flag worth investigating — the math says $80, not $120.

How to sanity-check:
- Use the reverse formula: sale price ÷ (1 − claimed discount) should equal the claimed original. If the numbers don't match, question the deal.
- Search for the item at other retailers to see if the “original” price is consistent.
- Check whether the retailer has sold the item at that original price recently — not just used it as a label.
